Artificial intelligence has the potential to bring about the extinction of humanity, according to several experts in the field of AI.
AI has made plenty of headlines in recent months, quite literally in the case of one Irish Times opinion piece, but concern is growing regarding the impact that the ever-improving technology poses to humanity.
Dozens of signatories - including AI researchers, engineers and tech executives - issued the sternest warning yet on the negative implications of AI.

The warning that appears on the website of the Centre for AI Safety reads: "Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war."
Among those to support the above statement are Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, as well as esteemed AI researchers Geoffrey Hinton and Youshua Bengio.
As AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and DALL-E continue to grow in popularity, several high-profile figures in the tech world have expressed fears about their potentially dire existential consequences.
Many proponents of AI, however, have played down such fears and argue that its opponents are simply voicing their dissatisfaction with the technology due to the adverse effect it might have on their financial interests.
The latest warning comes just a couple of months after an open letter, signed by Elon Musk and many others, which called for a six-month pause on more powerful AI tools to allow for protective technology to be developed in tandem.
