Arteta forces Kieran Tierney into surprising position switch at Old Trafford

Kieran Tierney was forced to play on the left wing as Arsenal drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford yesterday.

The 27-year-old's deal with the North London club expires at the season's end, and he has already signed a pre-contract to return to Celtic over the summer.

Despite agreeing to come back to his boyhood heroes, Tierney remains in contention for Arsenal as they look to end the season on a high.

They travelled to face Manchester United at Old Trafford yesterday afternoon in the English Premier League and drew 1-1.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring with a free-kick in first-half stoppage time, although Declan Rice drew the visitors level on 74 minutes.

Moments after Arsenal restored parity, Tierney was introduced by Mikel Arteta, taking the place of central midfielder Thomas Partey.

In a series of positional shifts, Tierney ended up playing on the left wing when he came on, with youngster Miles Lewis-Skelly, who replaced Riccardo Calafiori earlier in the game, turning out at left-back.

In his surprising attacking cameo, the Scotland international created a few opportunities, although Arsenal could only take home a point, which leaves them 15 behind league leaders Liverpool.

Having previously turned out at central defence, Tierney's versatile capabilities are coherent.

While he can adequately play across multiple positions, he will more often than not turn out at his natural left-back for Celtic next season.

Recently speaking on Tierney's return, Parkhead boss Brendan Rodgers revealed a deal to bring him back to Glasgow in January of this year instead of the summer was never on the cards: "No, it wasn’t close," he said.

"I think that it was clear, obviously, Kieran is for the summer. If that was the possibility [a January move], then that was on Arsenal’s terms, nothing to do with Celtic.

"If it was to happen, then great. But clearly, he was a part of their squad, and he’ll be here in the summer."
