Art show examines weird world of orchids

Beautiful orchids and weird characters are presented in a fascinating fashion during "Orkys", which is running at Tang Contemporary Art, until Jan 28.

A scientific term for orchid, the title of the show "Orkys" was chosen by Himbad, an international artist based in London, with the aim to express the the exhibition's leitmotif and render homage to his passion for botany.

On display are a dozen new paintings -- acrylic and spray paint on linen -- portraying Himbad's typical supernatural creatures with orchids delicately presented on the backgrounds.

One of the works shows a bat, suspended upside down, staring at us. From its open jaw, we can see the mysterious eyes of another entity. The same eyes show up from the huge and scary faces of a feline monster in another painting.

Another fanciful work sees orchids in the woods where a simple house fluctuates in the air, against the marvellous multilayered forest background, while a little cat interrupts the composition, surfing on a cloud.

The artist is reputed for depicting a fantastic world with a distinctive and unique aesthetic, unveiling an anthology of artistic inspiration which he sources from a heritage of high culture, with references to mythology, poetry, literature and science.

His works are exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate Modern in London, and MoMA New York, as well, in form of murals, on the walls of the most remote and unexpected places in Ibiza of Spain, Chiang Mai and New York. Tang Contemporary Art is located at Room 201-206 of River City Bangkok, Charoen Krung 24, and opens Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm.
