Art Laboe has died after a short battle with pneumonia, according to a representative for his production company.
The legendary DJ passed away at the age of 97 at home in Palm Springs. He was known for being a pioneering voice in radio and is perhaps best known for coining the phrase: "Oldies but goodies."
A statement on his Twitter page read: "It is with deep sadness we report the passing of legend Art Laboe, he was 97. He died peacefully at his home in Palm Springs, CA on Friday night, October 7, 2022 after a short case of pneumonia. Condolences to Art’s legions of fans, family, friends, and colleagues."
The sadness of his fans was felt on the post as a number of users took to the comments section to share messages of condolence.
One user wrote: "I loved listening to his show. What great memories. Art Laboe is a legend. Sending Love and Hugs to his family and friends as we all grieve his loss."
Another commented: "Rip legend, Sunday nights will never be the same," while a third said: "A legend! Thank you for all the music, all the dedications, and all the love you gave us. May you RIP."
A fourth user penned: "Oh no!!!!!!!! Art, we love you so much! So much. I'm so sad not to have you in the world now. May the ones you love have peace."
Longtime friend of Art's, known as Romeo on Yo Radio, shared a clip of the pair joking around on his Instagram before admitting the news had left his heart "shattered". He went on to thank Art for " believing in me, encouraging me and allowing me to be a part of your Amazing Journey".
TMZ reports the famous broadcaster was surrounded by close friends at the time of his passing.
Art started his career at the age of 18 at a radio station in San Francisco and started a new concept for DJs during the Second World War - taking requests and dedications.
He went on to become a successful record producer and concert promoter and also was the owner of a number of radio stations. His last syndicated radio show was produced last week before airing on Sunday.
