Arson investigators have spent the day probing the cause of a fatal house fire in Melbourne.

Firefighters pulled an unresponsive man from the house at Maidstone, in the city's northwest, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Emergency services were called to the single-storey property on Baird Street after reports of flames coming from the roof of the house about 3.15am.

Fire Rescue Victoria said firefighters received several triple-zero calls about the fire, with concerns about the safety of an elderly resident.

Victoria Police set up a crime scene early on Tuesday morning and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the blaze.

About 30 firefighters were involved in bringing the fire under control and the house was extensively damaged.
