Arson arrest as woman rushed to hospital after house fire

Police have arrested a woman on suspicion of arson after a house in Openshaw was set alight on Wednesday night (August 31). A woman, who got out of the property herself, was rushed to hospital after the blaze and sustained non-serious injuries.

The incident was reported at around 8.30pm on Wednesday, on Eastern By-Pass in Openshaw. A cordon was erected around the house, with forensics also remaining at the property throughout Thursday.

Pictures from the scene show a charred upstairs window, which appeared to have been blown out in the fire. A woman, in her 40s was arrested on suspicion of arson and currently remains in custody for questioning, police have confirmed.

A joint investigation is now underway into the cause of the fire. Fire crews were at the property for 'several hours' before the flames were dampened.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 8:30pm on Wednesday 31 August 2022, officers attended a fire at a property on Eastern By Pass in Bradford, Manchester. A woman was taken to hospital with non-serious injuries.

"Greater Manchester Police are investigating the cause of the fire and a woman in her 40s has been arrested on suspicion of arson. She remains in police custody for questioning."

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At approximately 3.30pm on Wednesday, 31st August, firefighters were called to reports of a fire on Eastern By-Pass in Manchester. Fire engines from Gorton and Philips Park stations quickly attended the scene. The fire involved the upstairs of a house.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire. One woman self-rescued before firefighters arrived to the scene.

“Fire crews were in attendance for several hours. The GMFRS fire investigation team is now working with Greater Manchester Police to determine the cause of the fire.”
