Arsene Wenger's final Arsenal XI - and the three players that remain at the club

Arsene Wenger waved goodbye to English football and Arsenal in May 2018 with a 1-0 win at Huddersfield.

It bought the curtain down on a tenure that lasted more than two decades with the Gunners unable to match his achievements since.

Arsenal's away day success came after a succession of failures on the road, which had served to highlight their decline under the Frenchman.

Wenger proved an instant success in north London, winning three league titles and five FA Cups within his first ten years at the helm.

A late flurry of three FA Cups covered up major cracks as Arsenal slipped out of the top four, having previously been regulars.

Unai Emery was his replacement and worked with a squad largely assembled by Wenger, although not much of it remains.

The Frenchman had seen major names leave the Emirates, some in cut-price deals against the club's will as a result of poor contract management.

We take a look at Wenger's final starting XI and where they are now.

David Ospina

The goalkeeper is now eyeing a Serie A title with Napoli.

Ospina rarely featured in the Premier League with the majority of his opportunities coming in the cup competitions.

In Wenger's final year he only enjoyed five league outings, but kept a clean sheet in the final game of the Wenger era before being immediately loaned out to Italy, where he has remained.

Sead Kolasinac

The Bosnian had been a big hit in the Bundesliga when he moved to the Emirates.

However, following Wenger's departure, he became an increasingly peripheral figure.

He was loaned back to Schalke last season and in January was allowed to join Marseille as Arsenal continued to trim their squad.

Rob Holding

One of just three players still plying their trade at the Emirates who were signed by Wenger.

Holding was added in 2016 from Bolton and has continued to be used by Mikel Arteta.

The defender has played in a back four and a back three, but is by no means a regular.

Ben White's signing in the summer means Holding has had to remain patient for his opportunities.

Shkodran Mustafi

The German has endured a horrid time in recent years.

Arsenal thought they'd finally found a dominant centre-half when they signed Mustafi in 2016 after seeing him perform for his country.

However, it soon became apparent that the defender was error-prone and he was allowed to leave for Schalke after struggling for minutes in January 2021.

He spent just six months in his homeland before signing for Levante in Spain.

Hector Bellerin

Something of a conundrum. Bellerin was named in the Team of the Year back in 2016, but failed to hit those heights again.

Technically he is still an Arsenal player, but left on loan to join Real Betis on deadline day back in the summer.

Bellerin has fallen out of favour since Wenger's departure after being snapped up as a youngster from the Barcelona academy.

Granit Xhaka is now playing under his third permanent manager (X01095)

Granit Xhaka

The Swiss star was Arsenal's marquee signing in 2016 and arrived having missed a crucial penalty for his country at that summer's Euros.

Xhaka has remained a regular under Wenger, Emery and Arteta but he has not been without his problems.

His disciplinary record is a major issue and, after being handed the captain's armband, he clashed with the fans during a home game with Crystal Palace in 2019 which saw him lose his leadership status.

Xhaka has admitted since that he and the fans will never be best friends.

Alex Iwobi

A product of the club's academy, Iwobi's versatility was often utilised by Wenger and he played the Frenchman's final game in midfield.

In 2019 he was sold for a notable fee to Everton, where he has been unable to showcase his worth.

Iwobi has scored just six times in over two seasons despite costing more than £30m as the Toffees battle to retain their Premier League status.

Aaron Ramsey

The Welshman's exit will no doubt still frustrate fans. He was given his opportunity by Wenger as a youngster and grew in to a hugely influential figure.

Arsenal opted not to offer Ramsey a new deal and his famous celebration at Fulham in 2018 told the story.

He would move to Juventus for nothing, although the switch never worked out, and he recently returned to the British Isles with Rangers.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

His stock seemed to shoot up and decline within a matter of months.

Aubameyang was the most expensive player purchased by Wenger and was a regular supply of goals - notching the final strike of his tenure.

There were no signs, at least in north London, of the problems that would follow under Arteta, which eventually saw the two parties sever ties.

Aubameyang's goal record is amongst the best Arsenal have seen but his attitude problems were too much for the current regime, who had frozen him out before his departure.

Alexandre Lacazette

One of the few who have lasted the course - but for how much longer.

The Frenchman has a matter of months remaining on his deal and could leave for nothing - an all too familiar story for Arsenal fans.

He's currently being asked to lead the line and, as an all round player, was seen as Aubameyang's superior.

However Lacazette has had to accommodate his teammates in different positions and could move on this summer.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

He came as part of the deal that saw Alexis Sanchez leave for Manchester United.

Safe to say that neither move was much of a success and the Armenian is now at Roma with Jose Mourinho.

He was one of a host of players farmed out by Arteta, who is very much in a rebuild stage at the Emirates.

Mkhitaryan has never been able to replicate the sensational form he showed whilst at Borussia Dortmund.
