Arsenal Women set sights on Champions League elite after ending Super League title wait

Arsenal Women want to become a major force in European football again after securing their first Super League title since 2012, according to boss Joe Montemurro.

The Gunners ended their seven-year wait for the title when they were crowned champions following a 4-0 win against Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.

Montemurro is now targeting another period of sustained success for a club who have won 15 league titles and dominated English football for so many years.

Arsenal are back in the Champions League next season for the first time since 2013 and Montemurro said: “We want to be up there in the upper echelons of European football.

“We need to be at the best against the best, winning leagues every year. We need to improve because women’s football is improving.

“The first thing I thought was, ‘How can we make this better now? How can we improve on this?’ We will improve as a squad and in the way we play. We have got different challenges, bigger challenges next year and we are just growing. This achievement is the first step to what is going to be an amazing journey for the team.”

Arsenal beat Brighton in front of a WSL-record crowd of 5,265 to re-establish themselves at the top of the domestic game after a difficult period following some significant investment from Manchester City and Chelsea.

Montemurro said: “The game is growing at a rapid rate.”
