Arsenal Vs Man United FA Cup Rivalry: 5 Most Memorable Clashes

The Arsenal vs Man United FA Cup rivalry will be rekindled as the two foes face off against each other in this season’s 3rd round.

Monday’s draw pitted the most successful sides in the competition’s history together once again. It will be just one of two all-Premier League ties.

Unsurprisingly, it is easily the standout fixture which will be decided on January 11 at the Emirates Stadium. Overall, there have been 16 previous encounters.

The Red Devils hold the bragging rights with a total of eight wins. For the Gunners, they have a tally of six wins with the remaining two games ending in stalemate.

Something the north Londoners can boast about is that they have knocked United out of the competition more than any other club in the competition’s esteemed history (7 – including finals).

Therefore, the law of averages will imply that the two have served up some FA Cup classics over the years. And of course, that is exactly the case.

Here at SportsCasting, we take a look back at 5 classic encounters as the Arsenal vs Man United FA Cup rivalry gets set to add (hopefully) another memorable clash.

Arsenal 1-3 Man United – January 25, 2019

The last time the Arsenal vs Man United FA Cup rivalry was contested was five years ago when the sides met at the Emirates Stadium in a 4th round clash.

Former Gunner Alexis Sanchez silenced the home crowd before Jesse Lingard doubled United’s advantage. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back before Anthony Martial secured safe passage to the 5th round.

Man United 1-2 Arsenal – March 9, 2015

The last time Arsenal beat Man United in the FA Cup came ten seasons ago at Old Trafford. The quarter-final clash was played under the lights and a Red Devils academy graduate came back to haunt his old side.

Defender Nacho Monreal gave the Gunners the lead before Wayne Rooney hit back for the hosts. Just after the hour mark, Danny Welbeck punished a defensive mix up to put Arsene Wenger’s side into the last four.

Arsenal 0-0 Man United (Arsenal won on pens) – May 21, 2005

Admittedly, the 2005 FA Cup final was hardly a classic. However, it was certainly a memorable clash for the outcome. The game itself offered little in the way of scoring opportunities. And nor did the resulting extra-time period.

During the penalties, Paul Scholes was the only player to miss. That meant Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira could win it with his final kick for the club whereby he duly obliged.

Arsenal 3-2 Man United – May 12, 1979

Over 99,000 fans crammed into the old Wembley to witness a remarkable final in 1979. The Arsenal vs Man United FA Cup rivalry arguably blossomed from this epic.

Brian Talbot and Frank Stapleton put the Gunners in control before United hit back in the 86th and 88th minute. Then Alan Sunderland earned legendary status by scoring the winner with just one minute to go.

Arsenal 1-2 Man United (AET) – April 14, 1999

Manchester United came out on top in a thrilling semi-final replay clash in 1999. A certain David Beckham whipped home the opener before Dennis Bergkamp levelled the tie.

Normal time brought no further goals but Roy Keane did see red. However, Ryan Giggs would go on to score arguably the greatest ever FA Cup goal when he waltzed past five Gunners players to lash home past David Seaman.

Ahead of this season’s competition, the best football betting sites in the UK price Arsenal at 8/1 to win the FA Cup. Man United can be backed at 14/1.
