Arsenal could be closer than previously thought to signing Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, that's after reports suggest that the player's future will be decided by August 24.
The Gunners have been trying to sign the 23-year-old for most of the window and see him as one of the best bets for additional forward-line reinforcement, but the move hasn't progressed significantly and that could let Premier League rivals Manchester United back in.
The Red Devils also hold interest in Gakpo but have likewise not made a move due to an expected price tag of more than £50m. The holding up is partially due to a number of other targets being pursued, with midfield also seen as a key area to strengthen before the end of the window, and because Gakpo only signed a new deal in January, tying him down until 2026.

However, with serious suitors throughout Europe, Ruud Van Nistelrooy's side have told Gakpo that he might be able to leave, according to Record Sport. It is said that Leeds have opened the bidding for the player, though they are also in for Ismaila Sarr as a replacement for previous Arsenal target Raphinha, and both United and Arsenal could make their offers soon.
The report does say that no decision will be made until after PSV's crunch Champions League qualifier with Rangers, though. The Dutch footballer of the year last season played all of the tie in a dramatic comeback win against Monaco last week and will now have his sights set on securing a Champions League spot.
Last week, Gakpo said, "we must first focus on [the second leg against Monaco] and try to make it to the Champions League. Then it is more likely that I will stay. I don't think I have said anywhere that I am leaving, so there is definitely a chance that I will stay. I'm open for a cup of coffee with the management - or coffee for them and water for me. We'll see how it goes."
The talented player is believed to be the target of up to five English teams but he has never managed to get his side into the Champions League before, and it would be a massive success if he could achieve it this season. The Dutch club have kept him focused though, reportedly telling the player that discussions over his future could be had after the second leg of the Rangers tie, which takes place on August 24, leaving Arsenal potentially just over one week to complete a deal if they are still interested.
However, Dutch football pundit Marcel van der Kraan thinks that the Gunners are no longer in pole position to sign Gako, saying, "if the choice is there, he will go to Manchester United. PSV have made it very clear there is no way they will sell this boy until they are certain they will play in the Champions League.”
