Arsenal to rival Liverpool as two Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang transfer replacements eyed

Arsenal are ready to do battle with Liverpool as they eye PSV Eindhoven's Cody Gakpo as a possible replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gunners could yet offload the Gabon international, who has been frozen out by Mikel Arteta at the Emirates.

He was left out of their training trip to Dubai and could now seek an exit, which would leave Arsenal light in attack.

Gakpo has scored 10 times and provided 11 assists for the Dutch giants this term and is attracting plenty of attention.

Arsenal and Liverpool are among those heading the queue, according to Footmercato, with PSV chief John de Jong admitting the player will eventually move on.

The technical director said: “Gakpo will of course not stay in Eindhoven forever. He will go to a top club in a top league in the future. Or will that happen next summer? That’s hard to say."

Gakpo is under contract until 2025 but admits discussions have been held with his representatives regarding his next move.

He said: "The clubs that want something are also known to me, I’ve had conversations about that with my agent.

“Very interesting clubs have been added, but we have to look at what the first step is.”

Napoli's Victor Osimhen is also being considered by the Gunners.

The Nigerian was only signed 18 months ago from Lille and appears content in Italy.

Gazzetta dello Sport understand that Osimhen is now Arsenal's top target with Newcastle United also keen.

A move from the north London outfit hinges on whether they can offload Aubameyang.

Arteta's forward problems extend beyond the Gabon star, with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah both seeing their contracts expire this summer.

So far there has been little progress in discussions with either man.

Fiorentina's Dusan Vlahovic has been heavily linked with a switch to the Emirates but the Serbian could now move to Juventus, leaving Arsenal to pursue other targets.

Arteta confessed earlier this month that if players can be added at the right price then Arsenal will look to do so.

He said: "If it's the right player, we can afford and we can do want we want to do, we will discuss it and come to the best possible decision. We are open.

"I think with the amount of things and the way we want to evolve the squad, we have to maximise every window in many different ways.

"We are alert. (Technical director) Edu and his team are working very hard because we know exactly what we need to do.

"Whether we can accomplish that in January or the summer is a different question and related to lots of other stuff but we are there."
