Arsenal to announce release list as midfielder confirms exit with emotional Instagram letter

The 2021/22 season concluded for Arsenal with a 5-1 win over Everton on Sunday afternoon and attentions now turn to what many supporters are hoping is a successful summer transfer window.

In terms of potential incomings and on top of expected deals for Matt Turner and Marquinhos, football.london understands Gabriel Jesus is a target as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his centre-forward options whilst Bologna's Aaron Hickey is on the radar given the club's issues at full-back this season and Youri Tielemans continues to be linked.

Whether the Spaniard and technical director Edu can get the majority of the deals in place over the line remains to be seen, but what is almost for certain is when next season begins, the Arsenal first-team squad will look a lot different from the one that navigated the campaign that has just finished.

One player that looks set to be part of Arteta's plans for the 2022/23 season is central midfielder Mohamed Elneny after football.london spotted what appeared to be him signing a new contract following the 5-1 thrashing of Everton at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Egypt international had been one of three players out of contract at the end of June alongside Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette. Whilst football.london understands the former has been offered an extension on a few occasions, it's also understood that the latter is unlikely to be offered one.

As a result, the Frenchman's substitute appearance against the Toffees could have been his final appearance in an Arsenal shirt and Nketiah has a big call to make to determine whether that was his farewell to the Emirates faithful. Speaking on Sunday, Arteta did reveal 'awkward' decisions have been made regarding the trios' futures and an announcement should be forthcoming.

If last year is any indication and judging by Arsenal.com, an announcement of the players being released - whether that be the men's, women's first-team, as well as U23's and U18's players, will come at the beginning of June.

One player who has already confirmed his exit is young midfielder Luigi Gaspar who just happens to be the son of Arsenal technical director Edu. Taking to social media, the teenager penned an emotional farewell after three years at the club.

"Thank you @arsenal, it's never easy to say goodbye, a club I've watched and admired since the first day of my life, my life started here, I was born a North London Boy… I wanted to thank everyone who was with me in these last 3 seasons I spent here, there were beautiful moments but also not so easy moments, sometimes things in football don't work out the way we imagined, but that's where you get thick skin to prepare you for any situation," he wrote on Instagram.

"I cried, laughed, made friends and built a family here... Eternally grateful for this club that opened the doors for me here in Europe. I arrived here as a boy, leaving Brazil afraid to face new challenges, and I leave today as a man ready for whatever is to come! My decision to leave was not an easy choice, but as I said in football, sometimes things don't go the way we want, I feel that now is a time to face new challenges, to go to a new home.

"I leave here this letter in thanks to all the players, coaches and staff of the club! Thank you for everything you've done for me these years! Thanks again @arsenal."
