Arsenal have submitted a new and improved offer for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez, according to reports. The Argentina international has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, with rumours of interest from the Gunners and Manchester United.
It comes after a busy start to the transfer window for Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard spent over £140million last year and looks set to match that this time around, confirming three signings at this stage.
More players look set to come through the door, with Gabriel Jesus reportedly agreeing personal terms as Manchester City accept a transfer fee. Director Edu has also hinted at more arrivals, saying: “We will now continue to work hard and are looking forward to finishing this transfer window as strongly possible.”

With a return to the Europa League on the cards, the need for quality and strength in depth is only emphasised. However, the window offers a chance to address that, with another goalkeeper and two attacking forwards joining the club.
The midfield and backline still need additional support though, especially on the left side of defence. Kieran Tierney struggled with injury throughout the previous campaign, causing issues when it came to finding a replacement within the squad.
Add to that the lack of options beyond Gabriel when he was suspended or out through injury and there was a problem for Arteta. However, Martinez, who can play both positions, appears to be the solution to that problem.
And in an attempt to bring him to the club, the Gunners have made a second bid worth around €40million (£34million), according to the Telegraaf. While it is an improved offer, Ajax are believed to value the player at €50million (£43million) to let him go.
It remains to be seen whether Arteta can get this deal over the line, but it would be a huge statement of intent to improve their depth and to beat rivals Manchester United to his services in the process.
