Bukayo Saka has apologised after missing a penalty against West Ham and vowed: “I’ll do everything I can to make it right.”
Saka sent a spot-kick wide of the post as Arsenal let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 at the London Stadium and hand the initiative in the title race to Manchester City.
His penalty would have restored Arsenal’s two-goal advantage at 3-1 but instead West Ham equalised three minutes later through Jarrod Bowen.
Saka had not missed from the spot since missing for England in the Euro 2020 Final shootout defeat against Italy.
But his nerve deserted him and he pushed his kick wide Lukasz Fabianski’s rightâhand post.
There has been a significant shift of momentum away from Arsenal in the title race and Saka posted on Instagram on Sunday evening to apologise for his miss.
“Regardless of the outcome, I’ll always accept my responsibility,” he said. “Apologies Gunners, I’ll do everything I can to make it right.”
Although Arsenal extended their lead over Manchester City to four points, they have played a game more and have to go the Etihad Stadium a week on Wednesday.
