Arsenal sign Amanda Ilestedt to bolster defence for fresh Women’s Super League title bid

Arsenal have completed the signing of Swedish defender Amanda Ilestedt.

The Gunners have been in the market for a new centre-back after Brazil captain Rafaelle Souza confirmed she is leaving for Orlando Pride.

Arsenal have acted quickly to sign Ilestedt and are thought to be in the market for further defensive reinforcements too.

Ilestedt joins after a two-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain and before that she played for Bayern Munich. The 30-year-old has represented Sweden 64 times and is part of their squad for this summer’s World Cup.

“I’m delighted that Amanda has joined us here at Arsenal,” said Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall.

“She brings extensive international experience and I believe she has a great mix of presence and technical ability, making her an ideal fit for our squad.

“I enjoyed working with Amanda during our time in Sweden and am looking forward to coaching her here at Arsenal too.”

Arsenal are working hard on new recruits this summer after finishing third in the Women’s Super League and reaching the semi-final of the Women’s Champions League.

They are closing in on deals for Canada forward Cloe Lacasse and England striker Alessio Russo.

Lacasse announced her departure from Benfica last week and Russo confirmed she was leaving Manchester United on a free transfer earlier this month.
