Arsenal set for Man United transfer battle as Edu given £35.3m option to strengthen key area

Arsenal could be set for a crucial summer transfer window to build on their significant step forward under Mikel Arteta this season. To the surprise of many, the Gunners shot straight to the top of the Premier League at the start of the season and with 12 games to play Arteta's men are still firmly in the race to be crowned champions of England.

A large reason for Arsenal's sudden mentality shift, evidenced with three last-minute winners in the last few months, was their summer recruitment. Signing Manchester City duo Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus ahead of the 2022/23 season was a massive statement of intent and both have proven to be more examples of shrewd recruitment by Arsenal.

January also looked set to be a defining month in terms of incomings. Not signing Mykhailo Mudryk and Moises Caicedo looked set to be detrimental to their titles hopes, however the two alternative signings in their positions have proven to be excellent acquisitions.

Leandro Trossard joined the Gunners, just a few days after Mudryk snubbed the north Londoners for Chelsea, following a public falling out with Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi. On deadline day, Arsenal signed Jorginho from the Blues in a £12million deal as cover for Thomas Partey.

The Italian's arrival was proven to be necessary immediately as Partey suffered a minor issue with Jorginho stepping in for him against Man City, Aston Villa and Leicester. Getting those four major signings correct has been and will likely be even more crucial as Arsenal prepare for the run-in which includes Europa League outings.

With attention likely to turn to the summer soon, Edu's job looks set to become hugely significant once again. West Ham star Declan Rice is the club's top target for the summer, football.london understands, while the Gunners also look set to bolster their options in attack.

Celta Da Vigo star Gabri Veiga has also emerged on the radar of Arsenal, as per Spanish outlet AS, along with two other Premier League clubs in Manchester United and Newcastle. The 20-year-old has scored eight goals and grabbed three assists in 20 La Liga appearances this season.

As revealed by Fabrizio Romano, Veiga has a £35.3million release clause and his performances have alerted many clubs, with Arsenal, United and the Magpies all sending scouts to watch his performances. Edu getting Arsenal's transfer decisions correct has been key to Arteta's project at Emirates Stadium and while signing Veiga could be a risk given his inexperience it will certainly be a decision considered meticulously in north London to determine if it is a correct one.
