Arsenal set for £2.5m transfer windfall after conclusion of Bundesliga season

Arsenal are set to receive a £2.5million transfer windfall from Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart after avoiding relegation on Sunday. That's because the obligation to buy agreement in Konstantinos Mavropanos' loan deal is now active.

A 2-1 win over seventh-placed Koln on the final day meant they finished in 15th and avoided a relegation play-off clash on goal difference. Hertha BSC now have to play third-placed 2. Bundesliga outfit Hamburger SV in a bid to stay in Germany's top division.

But Stuttgart staying up has extra significance for Arsenal, who are continuing to reshuffle Mikel Arteta's squad as part of the rebuild in north London. As previously reported by football.london, the Gunners were to receive a €3million (£2.5m) windfall from Stuttgart as per the obligation to buy agreement in the loan deal taking Mavropanos to the Mercedes-Benz Arena last summer.

Borussia Dortmund and West Ham have both monitored Mavropanos' progress in Germany, with several European clubs interested in signing the Greek international next summer. However, football.london reported last month that no official contact has been made with the player's representatives or respective clubs over a summer move.

football.london understands that Arteta had doubts over Mavropanos' ball distribution, despite the Greek international's impressive passing statistics in the Bundesliga last season.

After limited appearances at the Emirates stadium, the Greek centre-back's time at the Gunners has come to an end.
