Arsenal set 18-year Liverpool and Manchester City challenge as Mikel Arteta finds key edge

This season, there are high expectations on Arsenal after a comfortable opening day victory over Crystal Palace raised the bar for their standards entering the new campaign.

Mikel Arteta's side had been one of the form teams coming out of pre-season and were bolstered by key new signings to push them closer to the top four. Their 2-0 victory at Selhurst Park on the season's opening day only increased the Emirates' expectations.

An own goal from Marc Guehi added to Gabriel Martinelli's opener, giving the Gunners three points to start the season, a feat they didn't achieve until matchday four last term.

Although Liverpool and Manchester City remain strong favourites to take the league title for the sixth year in a row, there is a positivity that Arsenal could be amongst the chasing pack that attempts to seize the title away. There are as many as six teams hoping to force themselves into the top four.

With the strong pre-season has come closer attention to Arsenal, and Harry Redknapp believes that they could shock people and go all the way themselves. He said, "I think any of that top five could win [the Premier League].

"I think Spurs look strong. They're going to get a lot closer this year. I fancy Tottenham to finish third, and then it's Chelsea, Arsenal."

Speaking on GB News, the former-Spurs boss was confident that Arteta could sneak his team into the mix due to the instability of their rivals. He added, "I'm waiting to see who Chelsea brings in. That's really going to be the key for them. They have made a couple of signings, there's two or three more top players that keep getting mentioned with Chelsea.

"Looking at Manchester United, they are still three or four players away from really challenging."

The Gunners haven't won the league since 2003/04 but have a key edge over their opponents this season with no Champions League football and the opportunity to go far in the Europa League, where they look like one of the strongest sides and could give themselves an additional route into next season's European elite.
