Arsenal have four main midfield transfer targets, according to recent reports.
The Gunners are short of options in the centre of the park after allowing Ainsley Maitland-Niles to leave for AS Roma on loan until the end of the season whilst Mohamed Elneny is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations.
That leaves Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Albert Sambi Lokonga as the only fit and available senior central midfielders at Mikel Arteta's disposal and the Spaniard has made no secret of the fact he is looking to bring in reinforcements in this transfer window.
When asked on Sunday afternoon if his side are in need of new signings, Arteta said: "It's what we planned, but the market is difficult, it's complicated.
"We knew that, but it's a lot to manage and we have to make the right decisions with players that we believe are going to really help us and try to bring in ones that can take us to the next level."
He added: "Well, we are certainly trying, but I don't know if we're going to be able to do it. Let's see, it's not only our intention, but a lot of facts that are needed to happen."
Arsenal were linked with Wolves ace Ruben Neves as a potential replacement for Granit Xhaka last summer and The Athletic claim that the north London club have been impressed by the Portuguese international's performances this term.
The report also names versatile RB Leipzig star Tyler Adams as a possible target whilst Brazilian duo Bruno Guimaraes and Douglas Luiz are both possible solutions to their midfield woes.
The Gunners have been linked with a loan move for Juventus' Arthur Melo over the last few weeks, however, the Old Lady are only prepared to sanction an 18-month deal with an option to buy included.
