Arsenal's Cody Gakpo transfer chances boosted as PSV winger's stock falls amid Man United battle

Arsenal had a strong start to the summer transfer window addressing both the forward and defensive positions, which clearly needed strengthening towards the back of last season. Despite a good summer window, more acquisitions are still needed in January.

The Gunners have been searching for a midfielder and a winger since the start of the season without much success. However, Arsenal’s luck could be about to change as Cody Gakpo's transfer move has started to become increasingly more likely going into the January transfer window.

But, Arsenal are one of several Premier League clubs interested in PSV winger Gakpo, football.london understands. Despite this, the Gunners have still been given a boost to sign him after his quiet World Cup performance against USA.

Gakpo had an excellent start to the World Cup scoring three goals in games. This made him one of the talked about players, and this is also led to further speculation surrounding his move, and the opportunity for PSV Eindhoven to increase the price tag in January.

However, Gakpo was unable to continue his impressive run in the knockout stages, which could prevent further talk surrounding the winger, and as a result, prevent his price tag from continuing to increase.

Arsenal are not the only interested party as according to ESPN, Manchester United have included Cody Gakpo on their shortlist of potential signings in January to replace Cristiano Ronaldo. The winger has been of interest to Arsenal leading up to previous transfer windows.

The Arsenal wide-men have been excellent throughout the season and are a major reason why the Gunners currently top the Premier League. Martinelli and Saka have both scored five goals this season, which is an impressive statistic considering they are scoring from wide areas.

But for the youngsters to keep this level of performance and intensity in the future, there will be times when they will need rest. With a lack of depth in quality in the wide areas, this has not been the case for Saka or Martinelli, with Arteta forced to play both in the Europa League group stage this season due to a lack of options.

If Arsenal want to sign their long-term target in Gakpo, then Edu must be proactive in completing this deal. This has been further emphasised by the fact that Manchester United are now reportedly looking to replace Ronaldo.
