Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was kicked by a Tottenham fan in chaotic scenes at the end of the North London derby on Sunday.
With the Gunners winning 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, tensions were high at the full-time whistle.
Ramsdale gave the home support a sarcastic salute and kissed the badge in good-humoured banter but things then over spilled.
Gary Neville on Sky punditry duty labelled the fan a "idiot".
It prompted players from both teams and both benches to rush to the scene, with Ramsdale pulled away from trouble.
Neville said: "He’s snapped because a fan has come on and kicked him. He doesn’t mind a bit of a rumble, (Granit) Xhaka, but he doesn’t need trouble, Arsenal doesn’t need trouble, just get out of there and go and celebrate with your fans.
"That’s going to be one hell of a celebration in that far corner, you watch this. They’ve been accused of over-celebrating, Arsenal, at times this season but I think they’re well within their rights to go for it today."
Arsenal players then headed over to the corner of the stadium where the away support were.
Interviewed by Sky at the end of the match, Ramsdale said of the incident: "The Spurs fans were giving me some throughout the second half.
"I gave them some back to which the few people that I did to it was probably well greeted, sportsmanship like, and then a fan jumped over and gave me a little punch in the back so that’s what happened.
"It’s a shame because it’s just a game of football at the end of the day. Both sets of players tried to bring me away, thankfully nothing actually happened too drastically but it’s a sour taste - I’m sure we’ll enjoy it when we go back in the dressing room."
In the Sky studio, Jamie Redknapp slammed the supporter for his actions.
He said: "It’s completely unacceptable from the Spurs fan. He’s been getting stick all game as he said, he reacts, you can see Richarlison gets involved as well.
"This is part of football, that, a little bit of stick, but for a fan to come and do that as we see it unfold, come on and try and kick a player on the pitch is completely unacceptable. He’s got to get his water bottle, he’s got to get his gloves, and I’m sure that Spurs will act accordingly. He shouldn’t be allowed in the football stadium, that guy, and it’s completely out of order and unacceptable."
