Arsenal reject chance to complete six-year transfer mission amid major decision on PSG star

Arsenal reportedly rejected the opportunity to secure the services of Paris Saint-Germain star Mauro Icardi in the January transfer window.

The Gunners were on the hunt for a forward throughout the winter window having allowed former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to join Barcelona.

Fiorentina forward Dusan Vlahovic was spoken of as Arsenal’s preferred target but the Serbian instead elected to join Serie A giants Juventus, with the north Londoners then being left without any attacking recruits.

One man that they could potentially have welcomed to the Emirates Stadium is Paris Saint-Germain forward Mauro Icardi.

According to The Athletic, the Gunners had the opportunity to discuss a potential exchange involving the Argentine and Aubameyang.

In the end, Arsenal decided to pursue alternative targets or indeed stick with the remaining options that they already have in the form of Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah.

It is certainly not the first time that the Gunners have been linked with Icardi in the past - Chelsea having also been rumoured to be considering the striker in the past.

Back in 2016, his agent Wanda Nara confirmed that talks had been held with Arsenal.

She said: "There are many offers, but I do not negotiate with other clubs. I only talk about Mauro's contract, that's my role, not doing negotiations.

"Atletico Madrid, Tottenham and Arsenal have made contact. Napoli and Roma are also interested now."

Icardi eventually ended up remaining with his then employers Inter Milan before a 2019 move to Paris Saint-Germain.

He has made 87 appearances for the Ligue 1 side since, scoring 38 goals.

However, he has not been an automatic first choice at the Parc des Princes, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar all being preferred.

The 28-year-old has made 13 starts for PSG so far this season and scored five goals in all competitions.
