Arsenal reach 'full agreement' for Bernd Leno as goalkeeper set for exit after Fulham medical

Arsenal have reached a "full agreement" with Fulham over a transfer for goalkeeper Bernd Leno, reports David Ornstein. The Germany international is set to earn the Gunners roughly £8million, with a medical booked over the next week after personal terms were agreed.

It would put an end to a four-year stay for the 30-year-old, who has just one-year remaining on his deal at the Emirates Stadium remaining. Leno joined in 2018 from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for roughly £22.5million.

Since making that switch, the shot-stopper has managed 125 competitive appearances for the Gunners, keeping 37 clean sheets. While the goalkeeper has had to face some tough moments at the club, he was a crucial part of the Arsenal side that won the 2020 FA Cup final with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

However, the past season has seen Leno slowly slip down the pecking order under manager Mikel Arteta. The German saw his place as a guaranteed name on the team sheet change to that of a backup and cup option, making just eight appearances across all competitions last season.

That has largely been down to the form of Aaron Ramsdale, who joined the club from Sheffield United last summer for roughly £25million. The 24-year-old managed to make 37 competitive appearances last season, keeping 14 clean sheets and even earning an England senior national team call-up.

With Leno reaching a time that is often seen as a peak for a goalkeeping career, the need for regular game time is clear. The incoming Matt Turner will likely take up a number two role once the German makes his move to Fulham official.
