Arsenal were linked with Dayot Upamecano for some time, but the Gunners have seemingly been proven right about not signing him - at least according to former Germany international, Lothar Matthaus, who believes he's been disappointing in a Bayern Munich shirt so far.
Upamecano arrived from Leipzig in the summer for a reported £38.25m - as per Transfermarkt - and has made 25 appearances for Bayern.
Although the Bundesliga giants are top of the table, six points ahead of rivals Borussia Dortmund, they were served a bitter defeat at the weekend, losing 4-2 to 11th placed Vfl Bochum.
Matthaus says the result emphasises that Upamecano is 'yet to arrive' at Bayern following his big money move.
“With two players, the value for money is not right: Upamecano and Hernandez. You expect more. Upamecano hasn't arrived yet, he seems like a foreign body," Matthaus told BILD.
“Upamecano has been here for seven or eight months. How much time should you give him? After eight months, he gave me too little when he was on the pitch.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal chose to sign Benjamin White in the summer.
The Gunners were ridiculed for spending £50m on the Englishman before the start of the season, but he's since struck up a reliable partnership with 23-year-old Brazilian Gabriel Magalhaes.
White has helped keep 11 clean sheets in that time as Arsenal have looked far more resolute in their defence.
Missing out on Upamecano doesn't seem like the worst thing in hindsight and perhaps Arsenal made the right decision not to pursue him further.
