Lewis-Skelly, an England Under-19 international, made his debut for the Gunners as a late substitute for Jurrien Timber against Manchester City back in September, and he has since made a total of 15 first-team appearances.
This includes four starts in the English top-flight, starts in cup competitions against Manchester United and Newcastle, as well as a start against Monaco in the Champions League league phase.
His most notable moment in an Arsenal shirt came on Wednesday night, as he became the second-youngest player in the club’s history to start in a North London derby in the Premier League. The Islington-born talent played a vital role at left-back as his side sealed a 2-1 comeback victory over their bitter rivals.
Mikel Arteta and Declan Rice Hail ‘Phenomenal’ and ‘Fearless’ Lewis-Skelly
Speaking to TNT Sports following the Gunners’ derby day win over Tottenham in midweek, England international Declan Rice waxed lyrical about young Lewis-Skelly.
“The young boy, Myles [Lewis-Skelly], again just unbelievable at just 18, what he showed tonight was just ridiculous,” he said.
“I think I said to you the other day the 18-year-olds now, they’ve got no fear, they’ve got no fear whatsoever and I think there was four or five times in the second half here he has that Moussa Dembele trait.
“He uses that body to get away from stuff and sometimes, yeah okay it’s risky, but to show that at 18 with personality and character is honestly unbelievable.”
Rice went on to suggest that he expects the 18-year-old to eventually move back into midfield, his natural position, but maintained that his versatility across several positions will be a huge asset going forward.
“He is a midfielder by trade, he can play 6 and 8, to know these roles at 18 is unbelievable. Who knows what England holds for him.”
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta also sang Lewis-Skelly’s praises in his post-match interview, praising the youngster’s attitude and personality after keeping Tottenham’s attackers quiet in the derby.
“He was phenomenal. He is a real personality. He has so much trust in himself. He has that attitude about him. He had to play against Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski while managing the occasion. It is not easy but he was top.”
Next up for the Gunners, they welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates in Gameweek 22 of the 2024/25 Premier League season before hosting Dinamo Zagreb on MD7 of the Champions League league phase.
