Arsenal player ratings vs Man City as Holding awful Ramsdale spares blushes, Nelson shows fight

Aaron Ramsdale: Might have done better for the first goal but was sublime after that. Three outstanding stops to keep out Erling Haaland and stop the score from getting even more embarrassing for Arsenal. 7.

Ben White: Gave the ball away often in the early parts of the game as he struggled to get to grips with the City press. His block to stop Haaland making it two in the first half was outstanding, however. 6.

Rob Holding: You can forgive Holding for his deficiencies when playing out from the back. You can't be angry at him for what he's not. When it comes to how easily and consistently he was beaten in the air by Erling Haaland however, there is no excuse. Some totally irrational pushing up into midfield time and again that allowed City to cut through Arsenal like a knife through butter. A late goal was not enough to salvage a really poor display. 4.

Gabriel: Without his usual partner in crime, but this was an awful night for Gabriel too. Left running back to his own goal time and again, and couldn't handle it. Some really poor playing from the back as well. Looked totally devoid of belief. 5.

Oleksandr Zinchenko: With Arsenal struggling to get a foot on the ball at all, it was a difficult night for Zinchenko. One decent delivery, but it was defensively where he exposed quite regularly. 5.

Thomas Partey: Defensively off it for most of the night. Ghosted past in midfield time and again and outmuscled on an occasion that could have led to a goal for Haaland. Lost his composure to the end as well in an unnecessary scuffle with Jack Grealish. 5.

Granit Xhaka: Bought a few clever fouls early, but as Arsenal struggled to play from the back he was as culpable as anyone. Got involved in some unnecessary scuffles late on too. 5.

Martin Odegaard: Gave the ball away appallingly for the second time in as many games in the build up to a goal. Saw the ball rarely as Arsenal failed to get any foothold in the game. 5.

Bukayo Saka: When Arsenal did manage to get the ball forward they looked to do so through him. He was often crowded out though as the Gunners failed to get anyone up with him. 6.

Gabriel Jesus: On a rare instance where Arsenal got forward he failed to really make the kind of run that centre forwards need to get the goals. Couldn't really hold the ball up. Tried to dribble through on his own in the second half but to no avail. 5.

Gabriel Martinelli: Was a strange one to see him taken off so early on as he was one of the few who didn't look defeated by City's ascendancy. Could hardly get into the game though. 6.

SUBSTITUTES -

Leandro Trossard: Moved up front with Jesus out wide. Some decent link up play. Grabbed an assist for Rob Holding's goal, but it was too little, too late at that point. 6.

Jorginho: Offered Arsenal a modicum more control after coming on but the game was gone by that point. You wonder how it might have been if he'd started. 6.

Emile Smith Rowe: A hiding to nothing really as he came on for Odegaard with the game gone. Was good in possession though and showed why maybe he should have been given some more minutes before this point. 6.

Eddie Nketiah: Arsenal were able to get forward more once he was on the pitch and he looked a threat in behind. A nice cross that someone should have been on the end of. 7.

Reiss Nelson: Another really bright cameo for Nelson who looks as though he has the belief to make a change from the bench at the moment. Nice and direct and showed fight despite the score. 7.
