Arsenal player ratings vs Crystal Palace: William Saliba brilliant on dazzling debut but Gabriel shaky

Arsenal kicked off the new Premier League season with a big win by beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park.

The Gunners, who enjoyed a fine pre-season campaign, started the game well and almost went ahead within minutes through Gabriel Martinelli.

The winger eventually gave Arsenal the lead midway through the first half, but after that they failed to kick on. Instead, Palace fought back and Aaron Ramsdale made two fine saves to keep them at bay.

Arsenal, however, wrapped up the win late on as Bukayo Saka’s cross was accidentally headed home by Marc Guehi.

Aaron Ramsdale 8

Was a bit shaky in possession during the first half, but more than made up for it with a couple of big saves to deny Odsonne Edouard and Eberechi Eze.

Ben White 6

Had a real battle with Wilfried Zaha, who ran at him all game and troubled White with his pace. Managed to hold his own but got booked for his troubles.

William Saliba 9 | Star player

Arsenal’s best player and a brilliant debut from the Frenchman. Made a couple of huge tackles and blocks, and looked so composed on the ball.

Gabriel 6

Made some good clearances, but looked a little shaky compared to his usual performances. Will need to improve next week against Leicester.

Oleksandr Zinchenko 7

A good, solid debut from the left-back, who claimed an assist by heading the ball to Martinelli during a slick corner routine.

Martin Odegaard 6

Was just a little bit off it tonight and perhaps didn’t suit the frantic nature of the game, especially in the second half. Squandered a great chance when he passed instead of shooting.

Thomas Partey 7

A solid enough performance but nothing sensational from the defensive midfielder. Broke up play and kept things simple with his passing.

Granit Xhaka 7

Probably the best of Arsenal’s midfielders. Looked good in possession and stopped a few Palace attacks with some vital tackles. Booked for diving.

Bukayo Saka 7

Had a solid enough game, but not quite at the level he can be. Worked tirelessly tracking back to help White and got his reward with a late assist.

Gabriel Jesus 7

Looks like he will transform the Arsenal attack this season, with and without the ball. Offers bags of energy and can link the play well too.

Gabriel Martinelli 7

Was in the right place at the right time to score his goal. Missed a glorious chance early on, though, that should’ve put Arsenal ahead within minutes.
