Arsenal player ratings vs Brighton: Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson lively but Fabio Vieira passed by

Arsenal crashed out of the Carabao Cup after falling to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton.

The Gunners started this third round tie well and they look the lead through Eddie Nketiah, who finished well after Reiss Nelson had set him up.

Brighton, however, equalised before half-time through a Danny Welbeck penalty after goalkeeper Karl Hein, who was making his Arsenal debut, brought him down.

The visitors then struck twice after the break as first Karou Mitoma and then Tariq Lamptey got on the scoresheet to knock Arsenal out.

Karl Hein 5

Had a nightmare moment on debut as he gave away a penalty. He was a bit unlucky as he initially slipped before bringing down Welbeck.

Cedric 5

A first start of the season for the Portugal international, who had a difficult night at right-back. Two Brighton goals came down his side.

William Saliba 7

Looked a cut above a lot of players and oozed class at centre-back on the day he found out he was in France’s World Cup squad.

Rob Holding 6

Captain for the night and he did okay. Looked good on the ball and largely dealt with Welbeck. Will be disappointed how open Arsenal were on the counter.

Kieran Tierney 6

Had a solid game at left-back, where he looked tidy in defence. Got forward a few times and linked up well with Nelson when he could.

Fabio Vieira 5

Feels like his form has dipped a bit over the past few weeks. This seemed like a game he could take control of, but he never really got into it.

Mohamed Elneny 6

Neat and tidy at the base of midfield as he broke up play and kept things ticking over. Almost scored with an effort from outside the box in the first-half.

Albert Sambi Lokonga 6

He looked a bit off the pace in the first-half, however he improved after the break. Got forward more and went close with a few efforts on the goal.

Marquinhos 5

Never really got into the game much and didn’t cause the Brighton defence any real problems. Feels like a player who could do with a loan.

Eddie Nketiah 7

Took his goal well and looked lively up top all game. Was unlucky not to score a second when he struck the inside of the post early in the second-half.

Reiss Nelson 7

Is playing with so much more confidence after scoring twice against Nottingham Forest the other week. Setup the Arsenal goal and caused Joel Veltman problems all game.

Substitutions

Gabriel (Saliba 60’) 6

On at centre-back for the final 30 minutes and was solid enough.

Gabriel Martinelli (Marquinhos 60’) 6

Added some spark to Arsenal’s forward line, but couldn’t make the difference.

Gabriel Jesus (Tierney 72’) N/A

Oleksandr Zinchenko (Tierney 72’) N/A

Granit Xhaka (Lokonga 80’) N/A
