Arsenal player ratings vs Bayern Munich: Subs rescue Gunners as Jakub Kiwior gets harsh lesson

Leandro Trossard rescued a 2-2 draw for Arsenal against Bayern Munich in a pulsating Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Emirates Stadium.

The substitute fired home an equaliser after goals from former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane – from the penalty spot – put Bayern in front before the interval.

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring with his first Champions League knockout goal, and the tie is finely poised ahead of next week’s decider in Bavaria.

Here’s how we rated the Arsenal players…

David Raya 5

Uncertain in the build-up to Bayern’s first goal, which went through his legs, and committed early for Kane’s penalty, leaving the England captain with a simple finish.

Ben White 7

Assisted Saka’s goal but missed a huge chance to double Arsenal’s lead. Raced back to deny Leroy Sane with a last-ditch tackle when he sprinted clear. The best of Arsenal’s defenders.

William Saliba 5

Gave away the penalty for Bayern’s second goal with an uncharacteristically clumsy challenge but was otherwise solid.

Gabriel 4

Made the error leading to Bayern’s equaliser with a loose pass which was intercepted by Sane and all over the shop in the build-up to the penalty.

Jakub Kiwior 3

Flat-footed for Bayern’s leveller and skinned by Sane for the visitors’ second goal. A harsh lesson of the realities of this level.

Declan Rice 7

Not the main culprit but caught napping for Bayern’s equaliser. Worked hard in a good battle with England team-mate Kane and won possession for Trossard’s goal.

Jorginho 6

Faded after a bright start and failed to make a lasting impression on the game.

Martin Odegaard 7

Energetic and dangerous, helping Arsenal to re-establish a foothold in the second half at 2-1 down.

Bukayo Saka 8

Took his goal superbly to put Arsenal ahead and involved in the build-up to Trossard’s equaliser.

Gabriel Martinelli 6

Worked hard but struggled to make inroads down the left flank, and was hooked in the second half.

Kai Havertz 6

Had no sniff of goal as the false nine but pressed well and worked tirelessly, particularly when he moved back into midfield.

Subs

Oleksandr Zinchenko (Kiwior 45’) 7

Dealt far better than Kiwior with the threat of Sane and latterly Kingsley Coman, and was good on the ball. Should obviously have started the game.

Leandro Trossard (Martinelli 66’) 8

Rescued a draw for Arsenal with a fine finish in an excellent late cameo.

Gabriel Jesus (Jorginho 66’) 8

Immediately made a difference and the equaliser was made by his superb footwork in the box.

Thomas Partey (Havertz 87’) 6

Helped Arsenal to see out the game in the final few minutes.
