Arsenal on track to break Man City Premier League record as Mikel Arteta joins elite list

Arsenal put in another impressive performance to notch their fourteenth Premier League win out of 16 games this season, with a thrilling 4-2 win against Brighton. Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard both netted in the first half with Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli sealing the victory with strikes in the second 45, despite Kaoru Mitoma and Evan Ferguson goals for Brighton.

Manchester City dropping points earlier in the day against Everton saw the gap opened to seven points following Mikel Arteta guiding his team to their fifth consecutive Premier League victory. Arsenal face their nearest challengers beyond Man City up next as they welcome Newcastle to the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, January 3.

The Magpies missed their opportunity to go level on points with City after they were unable to find a winning goal against Leeds. But, Eddie Howe's side could close the gap to six points with a victory, which could also see City move to within four points of the Gunners if they beat Chelsea.

Only Manchester United and Southampton have stopped Arsenal from taking maximum points and with the Gunners now at a tally of 43, they have joined illustrious company as teams to make excellent starts to Premier League campaign's

According to OptaJoe, Arsenal are just the fifth side in English top-flight history to pick up as many as 43 points from the first 16 games in a season (3 pts for a win) after Tottenham (1960-61), Chelsea (2005-06), Man City (2017-18) and Liverpool (2019-20).

That is not the only impressive stat Arsenal have been tied to with the Gunners on track to break the Premier League points record achieved by their title rivals Manchester City in the 2019/20 season by amassing a total of 102 points across 38 games.

That total will be reached if the Gunners continue to win games at the same pace in the rest of the season as they have managed in the first 16 games of the campaign. And that would be quite the season!
