Arsenal news: Tottenham join Lautaro Martinez race as Mikel Arteta sends message to fans

Here is your Arsenal morning digest on Tuesday, April 5.

Tottenham join Arsenal in Lautaro Martinez race

Tottenham have joined Arsenal in their pursuit of Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, according to Calciomercato. The 28-year-old has scored 14 goals in 28 Serie A appearances this season, assisting twice as well.

The Argentina international did sign a new contract not so long ago, lasting until 2026. However with the Nerazzurri’s delicate financial situation, he is said to be free to leave if an offer worth €80million (£67million) comes in for him.

Whether either of the two north London clubs can afford that remains to be seen, but it could be a battle that rages on over summer.

Arsenal set to receive windfall after £142m World Cup boost

Arsenal are set to receive compensation from FIFA for having players at the 2022 World Cup later this year. The World Cup Benefits Program of FIFA sees clubs receive £6,460-per-day for every player released for the tournament.

The Qatar 2022 World Cup is set to take place over November and December of this year, a novelty for the competition that has always been played in the summer beforehand. With the Gunners set to have a number of players away on international duty for the World Cup, they could be in line for a windfall in their absence.

Arteta apologises to fans

Mikel Arteta issued an apology to Arsenal fans after the Gunners' 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Monday night. Speaking after the match, the Spaniard said: "Congratulations first of all to Crystal Palace for winning the match and the way they performed, but we weren’t at the races today especially in the first half.

"We were late to every ball, we were soft in the duels and we didn’t earn the right to play. When we did a little bit we were sloppy on the ball and we didn’t have any dominance, any sequences of play where we could take some control of the game and we conceded two poor goals. Overall it’s unacceptable, we put our hands up, apologise, regroup. Tomorrow is a new day and a new opportunity to prepare the group against Brighton."
