Arsenal news: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang outshone as Eddie Nketiah bags brace vs Chelsea

Former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been outshone by a Gunners flop after suffering a downturn in form for new club Barcelona.

The Gabon international started his career in Spain in blistering form as he bagged himself 10 goals in just 14 appearances – making it to double figures even quicker than club legends Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi. But he's hit a bit of a tricky patch after being left out of Barcelona's starting line-up against Cadiz following the Europa League exit at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt – and was outshone by an Arsenal flop netting the winning goal.

It comes as Eddie Nketiah bagged a brace in the 4-2 Premier League win over Chelsea. And Mikel Arteta has followed Arsene Wenger's final wish for the club before leaving the manager's job at the Emirates.

Chelsea talking points

Arsenal have regained ground in the race to qualify for next season's Champions League with a 4-2 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Timo Werner’s deflected effort had Chelsea level quickly after Nketiah’s first goal, with captain Cesar Azpilicueta then cancelling out a fine finish from Emile Smith Rowe before half-time.

Nketiah seized on poor defending to sweep home in the second half before Bukayo Saka banished his Euro 2020 final penalty shoot-out ghosts by converting a late penalty to put the gloss on a solid win for Mikel Arteta's side.

It was a game full of talking points, including Nketiah's brace and Arsenal's defensive shift.

Arteta follows Wenger wish

Mikel Arteta has helped restore Arsene Wenger's final wish for the club before leaving the Emirates outfit.

Gunners icon Wenger walked away from the north London club in May 2018, when he urged "all the Arsenal lovers take care of the values of the club". Following Arsenal's part in the formation of the botched European Super League last year and a number of controversial incidents involving the club's players, that has not always appeared to be the case.

And it has taken Arteta's arrival for the club to begin to implement its traditional values once again.

Aubameyang outshone

Former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is in the midst of his most difficult spell since moving to Barcelona – and has even now been outshone by a Gunners flop.

The Gabon international departed the Emirates in acrimonious circumstances in January after being stripped of the captain's armband, being made to train alone missing out on all subsequent matchday squads following a disciplinary breach in December. He had started his career in Spain well but his form has subsequently started to tail off.

He was not even in the starting line-up for his side's game against Cadiz on Monday and made little impact after coming on in the second-half. And the scorer of the winning goal will be a familiar name to Aubameyang and Arsenal fans – as Gunners flop Lucas Perez netting the winner.
