Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta request ignored as "confident" transfer claim made

Arsenal are now back on top of the Premier League after a thrilling win over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners put together an irresistible start to the game as a quickfire brace from Martin Odegaard put them in firm control. Gabriel Jesus extended their advantage shortly before half-time as the Blues struggled to find a foothold.

They did eventually reduce the deficit after the breakthrough Noni Madueke. The evening belonged to Arsenal though as they got back on track in the race for the title.

Take a look at all of the headlines coming out of the Emirates:

Arteta sees request ignored

A portion of Arsenal fans wasted no time in booing former Gunners captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during their huge match against Chelsea.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta made a point of pleading for supporters to give the forward a warm reception for all the good times he enjoyed at the club. He was treated to a chorus of boos from the home crowd as he waited to start the match alone in the centre circle.

Aubameyang's return did not go to plan as he only touched the ball on nine occasions - four from kick-off - and was hauled off at half-time for Kai Havertz.

Wright makes Edu transfer claim

Arsenal icon Ian Wright has claimed that Gunners sporting director Edu is "confident" of adding to the squad this summer with his phone "ringing off the hook".

Speaking to The Athletic, he said: "I went to the training ground the other day and I was with Edu and Mikel, and what's happening now at the club is we're not having to go out and cajole other people to come and join Arsenal. They can see what we're doing.

"Edu is saying his phone is ringing off the hook and they're very confident about the calibre of player they're going to sign. If you're going to challenge this City team, you're going to have to come correct."

Transfer "mistake" slammed

Speaking of transfers, Arteta has been told his move to sign Fabio Vieira last summer was a "mistake", with the midfielder having failed to prove his worth in North London.

Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit said: "He’s a very good player with the ball and could be perfect in a league like Spain, where it’s more technical, less physical when the game isn’t as fast as in England, but I don’t think he has shown yet that he can play a big role in the Premier League.

"You can also say that he’s struggled not getting consistent game time and when you compare him to Emile Smith-Rowe, who I think has a future with Arsenal, he’s not the same. Respectfully, I think it was perhaps a mistake signing Vieira."
