Arsenal news: Martin Odegaard shows key leadership as Real Madrid set Marco Asensio price

Here is your Arsenal morning digest for Sunday, August 28.

Marco Asensio demand

Carlo Ancelotti revealed Marco Asensio wishes to leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer with Real Madrid setting a £23.5million price tag for the Spaniard, according to The Mirror.

Arsenal are 'ready' to firm up their interest in Asensio with Mikel Arteta keen to add another attacker to his squad following Nicolas Pepe's departure on-loan to OGC Nice.

The Gunners could secure a cut-price deal for the 26-year-old who has just 11 months remaining on his current deal after refusing to sign a contract renewal with the Champions League holders due to his desire to play regular first team football.

Granit Xhaka claim

Arsenal star Granit Xhaka has a new fan in the shape of former Gunners star and Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira, as per The Mirror, with the Frenchman admitting he sees similarities in the Swiss midfielder's game to himself.

When asked which stars playing in today's game remind him of himself, Vieira responded: "Xhaka at Arsenal, I think he is a team player, I think he is somebody you may not notice, you may not mention a lot but he is doing really hard work for the team.

"I know how good he is, and he will come through this difficult period because he's a strong man. He's a good player, and he will show how good he is.''

ARSENAL MAINTAIN PERFECT RECORD

Arsenal maintained their 100% start to the season courtesy of a dramatic 2-1 victory over Fulham at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners started the game well but failed to turn their early dominance into too many clear cut chances. The best opportunity fell to Bukayo Saka, who forced a good save from Bernd Leno when through one-vs-one.

They were ultimately punished for that impotent first half as Aleksandar Mitrovic capitalised on a Gabriel howler to make it 1-0 to the visitors just as Arsenal appeared to be turning the screw. The Gunners bounced back well though and found themselves level after the talismanic Martin Odegaard's deflected shot beat Leno in the Fulham goal.

This was on display against Fulham firstly as he was seen rallying his troops to get back in position after Kieran Tierney overhit a cross. Then when Arsenal were slow to get up the pitch when playing from the back, Odegaard began gesturing at William Saliba to dribble out from defence and shouting to give the Frenchman the confidence to stride forward. He may not be a Tony Adams or Patrick Vieira type, but the 23-year-old is clearly an influential figure in Mikel Arteta's side.
