Arsenal news: Gunners given Marco Asensio hope amid staggering William Saliba demands

Arsenal will need a stellar summer transfer window to ensure they can keep the pressure on Manchester City next season.

The Gunners' Premier League title challenge ultimately ran out of steam, with Mikel Arteta eyeing reinforcements to ensure they remain contenders. One target who has long been on their radar is Marco Asensio, with Arteta now handed a boost to his hopes of signing the winger.

That boost comes as Arsenal legend Tony Adams warned his former side they will be unable to compete with City without investment and Arteta was left blindsided by William Saliba's wage demands for a new contract. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Arsenal news.

Asensio transfer boost

Arsenal have been given fresh hope they could make a deal to sign long-term target Marco Asensio. The winger has been monitored by the Gunners for some time and now appears to be heading out of the Real Madrid exit door.

Asensio has impressed since Carlo Ancelotti returned to the Bernabeu ahead of last season. But Los Blancos veteran Toni Kroos has given the Gunners hope that Asensio will be available this summer.

He told Total Real: "I have a feeling that Marco might not stay. But also more from outside reports than inside [knowledge]. In terms of Nacho and Dani, I have no idea. But I have a feeling. I’d be happy if they stayed."

Adams sends investment warning

Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams has warned Arsenal fans that the current squad has peaked already. The Gunners finished runners-up this season and Adams believes that achievement will be a struggle to match.

“I do fear that this could be as good as it gets for them. I hate to sound like a prophet of doom, but I do believe that a lot of this team has already peaked," the Gunners legend told The Sun.

"It was possibly the best season that many of them will ever have. I don’t think they’ll get to that level again. They’re definitely not going to challenge Manchester City next season and without serious recruitment this summer it will be a struggle for them to finish runners-up."

Saliba's staggering demands

Arsenal have been left blindsided over William Saliba's wage demands as they work to tie the Frenchman down to a new contract. Saliba became one of the Gunners' first-choice centre-backs in the season just gone, with the club keen to reward him.

The Frenchman current earns in the region of £40,000 per week, making him one of the squad's lowest earners. The Gunners are ready to offer him a deal worth three times more than that.

But Saliba himself is keen to earn a wage even more than that if he is to sign a new contract. Boss Mikel Arteta is adamant he is part of his long-term plans, but Saliba's demands could force them into selling him.
