Arsenal name Europa League squad as five new signings included by Mikel Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed his 24-man Europa League squad ahead of Thursday night's opening group stage match against FC Zurich.

The Gunners are back in European action after failing to qualify for last year's competition but will face a challenging set in fixtures in Group A. The Londoners will also lock horns with PSV Eindhoven and Norwegian giant-killers Bodo/Glimt, who embarrassed Jose Mourinho and AS Roma last year.

Although Arsenal had far grander aspirations than the Europa League, the tournament does represent another opportunity for the club to muscle their way back to Europe's top table - and unsurprisingly, Arteta has named a strong squad.

The Gunners' five new recruits all feature in the squad, including Brazilian teenager Marquinhos. The 19-year-old has already made a strong impression for the club's U21 squad after arriving at the Emirates in the summer.

And the former Sao Paulo starlet has now been rewarded with a spot alongside fellow new boys Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira and Matt Turner.

Marquinhos is not the only highly-rated prospect to make the cut in Arteta's 24-man squad, either. Promising midfielder Matt Smith is also set to be on standby for European action while young goalkeeper James Hillson will provide back-up to Turner and Aaron Ramsdale.

There are no surprises in defence, while midfield duo Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey have both been included in the squad despite their current injury issues. Partey is expected to be back soon but Arteta did previously warn that Elneny was likely to be sidelined for "months" rather than weeks.

As well as Marquinhos and the Gunners' usual first-choice forward options, forgotten man Reiss Nelson has also been included in the squad. Nelson impressed during a season-long loan spell at Feyenoord last year and was a losing finalist in the inaugural Europa Conference League.

Arteta will be hoping that Arsenal can replicate their domestic form in Europe when they travel to Zurich on Thursday. The Gunners are still the early pacesetters at the top of the Premier League - even though Manchester United condemned them to their first defeat of the season on Sunday.

Arsenal's perfect five-match winning streak was extinguished by United, who ran out 3-1 winners at Old Trafford. The hosts took advantage of a late second-half implosion from the Gunners, who were caught out as they went in search of a winning goal after restoring parity in the second half.

Arsenal squad in full: Ramsdale, Turner, Hillson; White, Gabriel, Saliba, Holding, Cedric, Tomiyasu, Zinchenko, Tierney; Partey, Odegaard, Vieira, Lokonga, Elneny, Xhaka, Smith; Marquinhos, Smith Rowe, Saka, Nelson, Martinelli, Nketiah, Jesus
