Arsenal make Reiss Nelson transfer decision as Mikel Arteta eyes squad improvements

With five signings already made this summer, Arsenal are still on the hunt to bolster their squad before the window shuts on September 1st. A central midfielder who can operate on the left and a winger is still high on Mikel Arteta's wish list despite the current priority being outgoings since the squad is far too heavy.

Raphinha was a serious target for the Gunners but the Brazilian expressed his desire to join Spanish giants and eventually the former Leeds star got his move in a deal that was worth approximately £55million. Arsenal were willing to pay huge money for Raphinha which suggests that funds are certainly available for a wide attacker to be signed.

But with not many ready-made wingers available on the market, perhaps the club may look at internal solutions, one of which is Reiss Nelson. The talented Hale End graduate broke into the first team in 2017 under the stewardship of Arsene Wenger but has never really been able to stamp his authority in the first team.

He then went on loan to German side Hoffenheim, where he started off well under now-Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann. But unfortunately, Nelson's impact and influence on the team began to diminish during the second half of the season.

Last year, Nelson was loaned out to Feyenoord, scoring two goals and notching four assists in 21 appearances for the Dutch side in the Eredivisie. He now comes back to Arsenal with the hope of being given opportunities to finally kick start his career at the Emirates Stadium.

The Athletic state that the 22-year-old 'may get chances' to impress Arteta this season, indicating that he will likely stay in North London. However, the report goes on to say that Nelson will likely have to wait until the Europa League group stage fixtures in terms of starting games. But with the incorporation of the five substitute rule in the Premier League, cameo performances in domestic competitions may also be on the cards.
