Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett has claimed the decision to rule Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette offside against Brentford was the wrong one.
The Frenchman thought he had given his side the lead against the Bees at the weekend as he tapped home from close range.
However, he was ruled offside by the linesman and VAR agreed but Hackett has suggested that he should have been ruled in line with the play owing to renewed laws over offside over the past season.
Speaking with Football Insider, he said: “The Lacazette goal that was ruled out for offside, I thought that was onside.
“That was a really tight call. We’ve had this since the beginning of the season, there was a statement saying the broadcast lines were going to be a bit wider.
“On the face of it, I thought that was onside.”
In the end, the decision was of course elementary with Arsenal going on to win 2-1 anyway courtesy of goals from Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe.
The call to rule Lacazette offside is not the only controversial decision that Arsenal have been on the wrong end of this term as they attempt to seal a return to the Premier League, with supporters left particularly infuriated with a number of frustrating refereeing interventions.
Ex-Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has also hit out on the way that games involving his former side are being refereed.
Also speaking with Football Insider, he said: “Look at what is going on – it’s not right.
“The decisions that have gone against Arsenal are laughable. If the same thing happened in another game it’s a different story. We saw that over the weekend.
“I understand fans get on the bandwagon about there being an agenda against Arsenal but honestly, Arsenal fans have a point. You just have to look at the decisions that went against us on Saturday.
“Let’s be honest, some teams get them and some don’t. We are not getting a break at the moment.”
