Arsenal's eight January transfer deadline day signings including club record deal

Arsenal are leaving it late if they want to make any signings this month - but it's something they've made a habit of doing over the years.

The Gunners were expected to be fairly active in the January transfer window as they are light in numbers in midfield and up front.

Mikel Arteta's priority is to sign a striker as Dusan Vlahovic emerged as his number one target at the start of the month.

Arsenal were willing to break the bank to facilitate a deal, but the Serbian snubbed a move to the Emirates in favour of a switch to Juventus.

The Gunners are now scrambling for an alternative with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang surplus to requirements after he was stripped of the captaincy.

Luka Jovic was seemingly an option in the short term but Real Madrid are not willing to let him leave due to Karim Benzema's recent injury.

Arteta has now reportedly turned his attention to Reak Sociedad's rising star Alexander Isak.

It's been a common theme for Arsenal throughout the window as their efforts to find a new midfielder have also fallen by the wayside.

Arteta's men seemed to be closing in on a loan deal for Arthur Melo after a productive meeting between his agent and sporting director Edu.

But Juve would rather a longer agreement with an option to buy to be included - something the Gunners aren't keen on. The Italians would preferably like to find a replacement for Arthur before letting him go as well.

Arsenal were also been linked with Bruno Guimaraes, but the playmaker joined Newcastle from Lyon instead.

Arteta is running out of time, but a lot can happen between now and Deadline Day.

And Arsenal are actually renowned for making a last-gasp January signing which gives some hope that they've not left it too late.

Cedric Soares (2020) is the most recent player to arrive on Deadline Day as the Gunners brought him to the Emirates on loan two years ago, before he would later sign a permanent deal.

Denis Suarez (2019) arrived 12 months prior to that on loan from Barcelona but that one turned out to be a huge mistake.

Then, there was Aubameyang (2018), who is arguably one of the best bits of Deadline Day business after Arsenal signed him for a club-record fee from Borussia Dortmund.

Kim Kallstrom (2014) would turn out to be an uninspiring signing, however, after joining on loan from Spartak Moscow.

Nacho Monreal (2013) was a stellar last-gasp acquisition as the Spaniard signed from Malaga for £8.5million.

Thomas Eisfeld (2011) was easily forgotten about after he failed to make an impact from Borussia Dortmund, while Andriy Arshavin (2009) made an instant impact from Zenit St. Petersburg.

Guilaume Warmuz (2003) was an emergency signing for Arsene Wenger in 2003 as cover for David Seaman after Rami Shaaban broke his leg in the December prior.

It's been a mixed bag for Arsenal on Deadline Day and if Arteta chooses to dip into the market in the final 24 hours of the window, he'll be hoping to land an Aubameyang type of signing - not a Denis Suarez or a Thomas Eisfeld.
