Arsenal live to regret £17m Christopher Nkunku decision as RB Leipzig make transfer statement

Legendary Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has frequently discussed nearly signing a number of superstars over the years.

The Frenchman has previously admitted that the Gunners narrowly lost out on footballing icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as well as former Chelsea star Eden Hazard.

And his successor, Unai Emery, who was sacked back in November 2019, also was left frustrated after failing to sign a talented youngster - in the form of Christopher Nkunku.

Emery was extremely keen to bring Nkunku to north London in January 2019, with the young playmaker netting his first goal for Paris Saint-Germain under the Spanish coach's stewardship during the 2016/17 campaign.

However, Arsenal were on a shoestring budget and unable to splash the cash to sign the French midfielder, who was reportedly valued at £17.2million at the time, before eventually bringing Dennis Suarez to the club on a short-term loan instead.

Eventually, Suarez was a major flop and a few months later Nkunku joined German outfit RB Leipzig, where he has gone on to establish himself as one of the most productive playmakers in the Bundesliga - notching 30 goals and 40 assists in just 114 outings, increasing his current value to £49.5m, according to Transfermarkt.

The 24-year-old continues to be linked with a move to the Gunners, as well as a host of other Premier League clubs, but Leipzig chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff has recently claimed that he won't be allowed to leave the Red Bull Arena anytime soon.

Speaking to Sky Deutschland, Mintzlaff said: "He [Nkunku] will also play with us next season because of course he is a very important player.

"In football nothing is ever certain, but that's our plan."

He then added: "Of course, players like Dani Olmo, Nkunku or Andre Silva are very, very important pillars who can and should continue to develop with us."

As Nkunku's stock continues to rise, Arsenal's failed transfer could be another one they regret in the long run.
