Arsenal legend told he would fix Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold's defensive issues

Arsenal legend Lee Dixon has been told that he could "sort out" Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold's defensive issues for the future. It comes as the England right-back received criticism as of late for some errors that have led to goals during a difficult patch of form for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp's men have been expected to challenge for the title once again, but a number of injuries and lack of rhythm has seen them start the season with just two wins, three draws and one loss from their opening five heading into the international break. It marks a difficult start for the German coach in his seventh season in charge.

The manager labelled it a difficult period for his side after a defeat to Napoli last week. Klopp said in his post-match press conference, "You don't think a lot after the game, you react more. We have to kind of reinvent ourselves because basic things were not there.

"If you're not playing exceptionally well, you still can defend on a really high level. We should be able to do that." The defending of Alexander-Arnold has been one facet that has come under criticism as of late, despite his role being a much more advanced creator for the team.

The 23-year-old faces an uphill battle to earn a spot as the first-choice right-back for England in the upcoming World Cup, having been named in the latest international squad. However, in the wake of some tough displays, the defender has been told that former Arsenal full-back Dixon could help solve his issues at the back.

Speaking on Talksport, fellow ex-Arsenal teammate Perry Groves claimed: "There's probably only three players at Liverpool who are playing at the level they should be, and he's [Trent Alexander-Arnold] one that's dropped off.

"It was always going to be his defensive qualities. Earlier on in tournaments [you can play him] where you have most of the ball but in the latter stages, hopefully into the quarter and semi-finals, he's not going to play because you can't trust him defensively.

"We've been talking about this for two or three years, and he still hasn't improved defensively. You have all these coaches, throw-in coaches, set-piece coaches, surely they must be working with Alexander-Arnold on one vs one?

"I'd send Lee Dixon up there for two days, and he'd get his positional play sorted out. Is it because he doesn't think like a defensive full-back, he doesn't want to defend? It doesn't seem like he's able to sniff danger out at all."

Dixon was a staple in the England side at right-back and won 11 honours in his 14-years at the club. However, the role of the ex-Arsenal man was very different to that of Alexander-Arnold, who is much closer to a Kevin de Bruyne type player than a traditional full-back.

Whether that sort of guidance would help the defender remains to be seen, however, the way he plays and the Liverpool system suits his play style. As for England, his place is yet to be found, with Gareth Southgate experimenting with the idea of playing him as a midfielder instead.
