Arsenal legend pinpoints key area Newcastle United star Joelinton can improve

Martin Keown believes Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton still has room for improvement in the goal scoring department.

Joelinton scored twice as Newcastle condemned West Ham United to a resounding 5-1 defeat at the London Stadium last week.

The Brazilian then played a decisive role in Newcastle's opening goal in their 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday, with his effort taking a telling deflection off David Raya, who was credited with the own goal.

The 26-year-old has been a crucial figure during the Magpies' transformation under Eddie Howe, and has been given a new lease of life since he was converted from a striker to a central midfielder last season.

He has also filled in as a left winger in the absence of Allan Saint-Maximin at times this season, but Keown insists Joelinton still needs to add to his tally in front of goal.

“I think that’s the one area Joelinton needs to improve when he’s in front of goal, and he’s got lucky there for sure," the former Arsenal and England defender told BT Sport Score.

“In front of goal, I still feel he’s not quite really top level. In midfield, in his work-rate and what he’s done he’s been amazing. But in front of goal there are times when he can be better."

Joelinton has been directly involved in nine goals this season - registering six goals and three assists. He is currently level with his personal record for goals scored in a single season across all competitions.
