Arsenal issue Laura Wienroither update as latest ACL injury confirmed

Arsenal have confirmed another huge injury blow as 24-year-old Laura Wienroither ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament in the semi-final defeat to Wolfsburg earlier this week.

The Gunners suffered a heartbreaking last-gasp defeat to the German side at the Emirates Stadium and narrowly missed out on a place in the Champions League final. Wienroither was on the pitch just 20 minutes before she was stretchered off in the second-half.

The Austria international came on just after the hour mark in place of Noelle Maritz. Arsenal were trailing 2-1 (4-3 on aggregate) and Jen Beattie found an equaliser shortly afterwards.

Minutes later, Wienroither hit the turf and, despite attempting to limp off the pitch, she was stretchered off as a result of the injury and replaced by Kathrine Kuhl.

In a statement, Arsenal confirmed the news following assessments to determine the extent of the injury. Wienroither will undergo surgery in due course and faces an extended spell on the sidelines.

She joins teammates Beth Mead, Vivianne Miedema and Leah Williamson, who all suffered similar injuries this season. Williamson was the latest after limping off in the WSL match against Manchester United last month.
