Arsenal invincible backs £28.8m star to become next captain amid Real Madrid transfer links

Arsenal invincible Gilberto Silva has backed Kieran Tierney to become the next Arsenal captain

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was relieved of his captaincy duties back in December following a disciplinary breach and the Gabon frontman has since left the club, joining Barcelona during the January transfer window.

Fellow forward Alexandre Lacazette has been wearing the armband over the last few weeks but the Frenchman is into the final five months of his contract at the Emirates Stadium, with little talk of him renewing his deal in north London.

Now, Gunners icon Gilberto has named left-back Tierney as a potential skipper on social media.

The Brazilian's tweet read: "We love to see your passion, future captain?"

Tierney, who is valued at £28.8million by Transfermarkt, donned the armband during the dying embers of Saturday's 2-1 win over Brentford after Lacazette had been substituted.

Despite signing a new contract with Arsenal last summer, the Scottish international has been linked with a move to La Liga giants Real Madrid in recent times - a move that Liverpool hero Steve McManaman can't see happening.

"I’d be surprised if Real Madrid went for Kieran Tierney," McManaman told HorseRacing.net.

"Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a really good player and he’d be fine for Madrid but he’s probably not the right type of player for Madrid.

"When you look at their left-backs, Roberto Carlos, Marcelo, and now Ferland Mendy, it’s all about going forwards. Kieran Tierney is a better defender than all those players mentioned but I’d be surprised if they went for somebody like him.

"Could he play for them the way they are at the minute? Definitely. I think he’s a really good defender and they need defenders.

"But it would be a very left-field punt for me, looking at what Real Madrid normally do and the people they buy and how they operate."
