Arsenal in line for £24m summer transfer boost as Edu’s genius decision finally pays off

Arsenal loanee Lucas Torreira has been showered with praise by ex-Fiorentina star Domenico Caso as he continues to enjoy a brilliant impact at the Serie A club. The Uruguayan midfielder joined the club on a season-long loan deal and has caught the eye.

He has made 24 appearances for La Viola in all competitions thus far this season and has even found himself on the scoresheet on a clutch of occasions. After netting against Bologna last weekend, Torreira followed that up by scoring in the recent 1-1 draw against reigning champions Inter Milan - also losing a tooth during the game.

His string of impressive performances has seen Torreira garner plenty of praise. Ex-Fiorentina man Caso is the latest to highlight his positive showings.

Speaking with Tuttomercatoweb, he said: “Torreira? I’m not surprised.

“The player we saw at Arsenal and Samp, despite his physical size, always showed great tactical intelligence and the ability to be a leader in the middle of the field.

“He left Italy perhaps to get some satisfaction, but he’s not a discovery for us; he had already shown his value.”

Torreira’s positive interventions for the Serie A crown will only serve to benefit the Gunners in the long run as they attempt to raise funds ahead of the summer transfer window. Having been allowed to join Fiorentina on a season-long loan deal by current sporting director Edu, there remains the possibility for the Serie A club to complete a permanent move for the Uruguayan midfielder.

He is currently valued at £18m by transfermarkt - a fee that would likely come in considerably useful should Fiorentina elect to make a move in the summer. As it stands, he has just over one year left on the original contract that he signed in 2018 following a move from Sampdoria.

Should a move be facilitated this summer, then Arsenal would also be saving on the £75,000 per week wages that they would otherwise have paid the 26-year-old. In all, that would see the Gunners save just a touch under £4m over the final year of Torreira’s contract.
