Arsenal handed perfect win-win transfer situation amid Inter Milan's chase for Edu's £47m target

Inter Milan are reportedly interested in signing one of Arsenal’s summer transfer targets, but Edu could be set to benefit from the Serie A sides’ pursuit.

According to Italian news outlet Calciomercato, Inter are interested in signing Jonathan David from Lille who is set to be available for a transfer in the summer.

The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in the past, and he is a player the Gunners could have looked to sign in the summer.

However, if David does join Inter Milan, then it opens up the opportunity for Edu to go in for Lautaro Martinez considering David would be a direct replacement for the Argentine forward, meaning Arsenal have positioned themselves in a win-win situation.

Calciomercato recently claimed that Arsenal have added Lautaro Martinez to their shortlist of summer of striking options, as Arteta plots his new-look strike force.

The Gunners were reportedly interested in signing Martinez last season, but he opted to sign a new contract at his current club Inter Milan.

But after a deal failed to materialise, the north London had switched their attentions to young strikers with David being a part of this crop.

According to The Athletic, the club has been a long-time admirer of the young striker since his time in Belgium with Gent before he joined Lille in 2020.

In this campaign, David already has 12 goals in Ligue 1 which is the second-highest in a league that boasts the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi, so it would be an opportunity missed if Arsenal didn’t secure his signature.

But if Inter Milan were to sign David, Arsenal would arguably benefit even greater from the signing of Martinez who is more experienced and only three years senior to the Canadian international.

Despite 24 still being a younger age for a striker, Martinez is still very experienced having scored 11 goals in 22 Serie A games for Inter this season, and 61 goals in 166 games for the club overall.

And his ability to score goals has been carried over to the Argentina national team as he has scored 19 goals in 37 caps and played a major part in their Copa America win in the summer.

Arsenal are unusually positioned to win in either of the scenarios if Inter Milan succeeds or fails to complete the signing of David, as Edu can land one of the two strikers in whatever the outcome may be.
