Arsenal handed huge Bukayo Saka contract boost amid Mohamed Salah's Liverpool statement

Mikel Arteta has a monumental summer ahead of him in the context of his tenure at Arsenal. The Gunners came so close to a return to Champions League football but narrowly missed out at the end of the season.

Instead, the North London outfit will have to settle for the Europa League, with the summer providing the ideal time to regroup ahead of another long campaign. It will also give Arteta a chance to reinforce his squad, an opportunity that was passed up in January.

Discussing his plans for the summer, the Spaniard said: "We are going to have certain resources, not unlimited resources, some resources. And with our resources, we have to play and do what we have to do in the best possible way."

Several players have been linked with a move to the Emirates, from strikers such as Gabriel Jesus and Alexander Isak to midfielders such as Ruben Neves and Youri Tielemans. However, just as important as adding to the squad is reinforcing the current players, given the talent available.

One of those players in question is youngster Bukayo Saka, who has continued his meteoric rise from the Hale End academy. The 20-year-old was crucial last season, scoring 11 and assisting seven goals in 38 Premier League appearances.

However, a concern to the Gunners will be his dwindling contract, with his deal expiring in 2024. Reports have suggested that talks have begun between the England international and the club over an extension. However, the lack of Champions League football may come as a blow to those chances.

Premier League rivals Liverpool are one side that have been linked with a move for Saka, given their need for a refresh in the front line. Talismanic forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are nearing the end of their own contracts, opening speculation on their future, which could escalate their need to sign a forward.

However, Salah has already confirmed his intention to stay for at least one more season at the club, saying: “I am staying next season for sure.” That could be a huge boost in dealings with Saka, given the interest from the Reds, as it could give the club one more season to show their ambition and push for the top four.
