Arteta remains tight-lipped on Pepe as Ivorian nears move

Mikel Arteta was unwilling to "talk about individuals" after he left Nicolas Pepe out of Arsenal's matchday squad for the 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday evening.

Pepe appears ever-closer to making a return to Ligue 1, with OGC Nice in discussions over a loan move for the 27-year-old. Should a move be completed, the Ivorian will join Folarin Balogun and Nuno Tavares as the next Gunners first-team player to join a French club on loan.

When asked how close Arsenal's record signing was to joining Nice, Arteta claimed: "We don't talk about individuals. There were a few players that we have to leave out of the squad, unfortunately. It's painful, but we try to bring the team and the squad that is in the best condition to give us the best chance to win the game."

Manchester United are another side linked with the 23-year-old, and the Athletic state that Erik ten Haag has identified Gakpo as an alternative to Ajax winger Antony, who United have seen an €80million (£68million) offer turned down for.
