Arsenal Hale End ace Marcelo Flores has key role in £47m striker transfer after manager approach

Arsenal youngster Marcelo Flores could be key in Mikel Arteta solving the current striker issues that are preventing his side from a guaranteed spot in the Champions League.

Despite seemingly opting to represent Mexico as his national team, Flores is still eligible to choose Canada, who are currently flying in their push for World Cup qualification in 2022.

The Canada boss sang the praises of the youngster and suggested that he wants to select Flores, meaning he could team up with reported Arsenal transfer target Jonathan David.

This could give an extra incentive for a deal to be completed if the two players can link up, and David would certainly be an excellent solution to the Gunners’ striker issues.

Canada coach, Jon Herdman said: “We’ve got stars now, we’ve got young star players that are going to be around for a long generation.

I’m sure you’ve got players like young Marcelo Flores [who] might be looking after this game and wondering whether he wants to play for Mexico or Canada.”

Flores has gained a lot of popularity from Arsenal fans after already receiving a call-up for the senior Mexico national team, despite not yet breaking into Mikel Arteta’s side.

His popularity will only grow if he plays his part in the Gunners signing David, who Arsenal appear to value as a quality player. According to The Athletic, the club has been a long-time admirer of the young striker since he was in Belgium with Gent before joining Lille in 2020.

He has been extremely prolific this season, which shows he has developed from the year previously where he did not get off to the greatest of starts at Lille. However, in this campaign, the Canadian international already has 12 goals in Ligue 1 this season, which is the highest in a league that boasts the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.

Arsenal are in desperate need of reinforcements up front as not only are Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah the only senior strikers at the club but their contracts are also set to expire at the end of the season.

David has been performing excellently this season in Ligue 1 and in the Champions League, having played a pivotal part in the club’s European knockout stage progression.

The 21-year-old will reportedly cost around £47 million, and it could turn out to be a bargain transfer if the Canadian international agrees to join the club thanks to a potential helping hand of Flores.
