Arsenal given perfect Tottenham transfer response amid Erik ten Hag's failed £35m move

Arsenal need to strengthen the full-back positions ahead of the next campaign. Both sides of the defence need better strength in depth, with the summer transfer window being the perfect chance to solve this issue.

Spurs are on the verge of strengthening both of their full-back positions this summer, with Ivan Perisic already signing earlier in the window and Arsenal target Djed Spence reportedly close to a move to Antonio Conte’s side.

Alongside Lisandro Martinez, the Gunners can also attempt to sign Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan. The Dutchman’s proposed move to Manchester United has broken down, which gives Arsenal a perfect chance to explore a possible deal.

According to Italian news outlet Calciomercato, Dumfries is set to reject a move to Manchester United. The Dutchman has been tipped to leave the Serie A side since the start of the summer, which means there is an opportunity for Arsenal to secure his services.

Despite the excellent acquisition of Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna in a bargain £19.8m deal, Arteta’s side still requires another right-back in the squad. Due to the sale of Calum Chambers, it means that Tomiyasu has been left with little competition for his spot, with the Japan international showing himself to be prone to injury problems in his debut campaign at the Emirates.

Cedric Soares has been utilized as Tomiyasu’s back-up this campaign, but his performances have shown that he is not at the level that is required for Arsenal to be competing for a regular place in the Champions League. The Portugal international needs to be replaced by a more reliable full-back.

The Gunners had previously held an interest in Dumfries, and it is a deal that Arteta could look to reignite. With Mikel Arteta needing to strengthen the full-back department in the summer, Dumfries is certainly a player that Edu should register interest in despite Manchester United also identifying him as a target.

Spanish Journalist Kike Marin reported that Dumfries was one of the transfer targets for Arsenal in the summer window of 2020. Dumfries was in the Eredivisie with PSV Eindhoven at the time, but he decided to join Inter Milan.

The 6ft 2ins defender is unsurprisingly strong in the air, making him a set-piece threat. He’s good going forward, though there are still some question marks around his defending. But he would be a better option than Cedric in terms of being an understudy to Tomiyasu.

According to the Italian news outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan have reportedly set the asking price at £30million. This is certainly a deal that Edu should explore to strengthen Arteta’s options at full-back.
